This type of neck pillow is not generally used while sitting up. There are other pillows made for comforting travelers and so forth. This neck pillow is made for use in purposeful relaxation. It is stuffed to the gills with buckwheat hulls. Buckwheat hulls are not soft and fluffy. They're like dried corn. Small, hard, and will shift. Which means the neck pillow will support your head and neck nicely during relaxation. Painfully missing are instructions on how to find the "sweet spot" where the pillow provides a gentle stretch with support. If you don't place the pillow beneath the sweet spot (the base of the skull), you'll be uncomfortable. It's good the pillow is stuffed so full. Some people will like it that way. Others can remove some of the fill. I've purchased neck pillows before and find that eventually the buckwheat hulls break down. So a new user will have a break-in period between finding that sweet spot and the buckwheat hulls settling.
The eye pillow is about 4 by 8 inches and weighs about half a pound. I purchased the herbal, which is filled with flaxseed and chopped dried herbs (also not explained on the website). The herbs are peppermint, lavender and sage. The scent is soothing, not overpowering. It goes away after a while anyway. Again, no instructions for use, but at least there's a picture in the package showing someone using the product. The eye bag is for lying down and relaxing. It has no straps or elastic. It is not a sleep mask. The weight of the fill presses down on the muscles around the eyes. Eye bags can also be placed in the palms or on the back of the hands while lying down. This helps produce stillness and relaxation from the shoulder joint to the fingertips. Of course, you need two eye bags.
The silk fabric cover is very nice against the skin. It stays cool during hot weather, but doesn't get feel cold when the weather is cold. Both items can be chilled in plastic bags in the freezer prior to use. The neck pillow can be microwaved for warm therapy, but the eye bag has a zipper with a metal tab. The combination of the neck pillow and the eye bag can aid the user in relaxation/restoration practice, or just plain pampering. Buying them in combination is a good bargain.
