(More customer reviews)I hadn't been able to find this pillow locally, so I bought it sight unseen. I have many Design Salt products (that's the company owning Cocoon), so I wasn't worried about quality. I've never had a problem yet, either with their sleep sacks, or silk (also cotton) travel clothing, so that aspect didn't come to mind at all.
As I'd expected, this pillow was well-made, and larger yet much lighter and more compressible than other travel pillows of this size. At roughly 13"x17", this pillow is large enough to actually use in a hotel if needed. Yet it literally bags up smaller than a 12-ounce soda can, so if size is limited in your carry-on, this fills that requirement. It's also very light (under 6 ounces), so no worries there either. One outer side is nylon, and the other one a fleecy material. If you don't want to spring for a pillowcase, you can get by. However, Design Salt does sell cases for this pillow on their site - the cases match their cotton/silk/fleece Travelsheets.
What did surprise me was the lack of fill padding - it's so thin as to be nonexistent, merely there as a marketing tool, in my opinion. If you are thinking of getting this pillow to use without inflating it, don't. You must inflate this pillow to use it. If you have to have a totally silent pillow under your head, be warned the nylon side is a little rustly if you move your head about. And, if you've been let down in the past by an inflatable pillow going flat without so much as a by-your-leave, this pillow might not be for you. Patching this one (if necessary) might be a little fiddly and very time consuming due to the sewn-around fabric cover. The padding is not enough to protect it from sharp items. Traveling with animals or fishing tackle? Probably not with this pillow.
If you've used Cascade Designs' Therm-A-Rest pads, you'll recognize the air valve. Unlike the Cascade Designs sleeping pads, this Cocoon pillow does not self-inflate. You need to inflate it by mouth. If you travel in areas where breath condensation could condense inside an item, this non-self-inflating pillow might not be the best choice.
If you just want a pillow which fits into the smallest carryon without adding significantly to the weight, can handle using an inflatable pillow, and don't mind a teeny bit of rustle, I think this pillow might fit your needs. It's fit mine so far.
One star off for lack of fill around pillow. Company needs to stress the pillow cannot be used without air. The other Cocoon pillows (down and synthetic down) do not inflate. Air-core makes it sound like it's there to bolster a thin but serviceable synthetic-fill pillow. It would have been better to call this an inflatable pillow and remove all doubt.
