How is the Ilex in Biofreeze extracted from the holly shrub? While of course the process is proprietary to the makers of Biofreeze, Ilex is brewed from the holly leaf and then evaporated to form a powder which through a proprietary process is included in just the right amount into Biofreeze. I would not recommend your trying this yourself as the holly plant is generally considered to be toxic except to certain birds. Do not eat or allow your children to eat the (red) holly berries or leaves of the holly shrub; it's toxic in this form.
Biofreeze's shelf life is two years, and you can find the expiration date located on the package. Thus order only what you think you will use within a two year period.
Biofreeze with Ibel comes in these forms: Gel, Gel with Hands-Free Applicator (I haven't tried this form yet, but plan to do so soon), Wipes, Spray, Tubes and Pump Bottles, Roll On, and Packets. My favorite way of application is using the Biofreeze spray. One of the most helpful uses of the spray is applying it to two of my finger knuckles that suffer from arthritis; after which the pain begins to subside and movement is easier -- this takes repeated daily applications to make the most progress. The spray allows one to apply it to hard-to-reach areas, such as the middle back and lower extremities; and you don't get it over your hands when applying it. For me and my wife the spray seems to get the right amount on and it seems to be best absorbed, but I have no scientific proof of this.
Even though with the spray you don't get it on your hands and fingers please be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after application and avoid touching any where close to your eyes.
You will find Biofreeze spray in a much larger bottle here on Amazon, but this size is more convenient and portable. It is not a wonder potion, but it does help me the most of any product like it; I hope it works for you too.

(More customer reviews)Through the years I have had issues with my back. I am a surfer. I have had experiences where I do nothing more than bend to the side and all of a sudden that spasm feeling takes hold and I can barely stand up straight. It can take up to two weeks for the pain to go away and the muscles/bones to go back into place. I had a bad experience with a Chiropractor years ago and I was really afraid of them. After returning from a vacation last year which ended in the same back spasms, I finally decided to give the Chiropractor a chance to take away this pain. I was lucky enough to find one that was able to put the bones back into place. I was able to move properly and the pain was gone in one day.
A friend of mine who also happens to be a surfer/bicycle enthusiast and in his 50's, has worse back issues than me and he told me about the Saunders Hometrac lumbar unit. It sounded like just the thing for me as we may be moving to an area where it will be very difficult to get to a Chiropractor. I have tried it out several times when I feel that my back is getting a little sore and maybe starting to go out or just not quite right and IT IS GREAT! I had a hard time working in the yard and now I barely feel anything after bending over for long periods of time. Even surfing and light lifting no longer leave me with a sore back. This unit stretches the body in the lumbar area and pulls everything back into place.
I will provide the information I was given (use these at your own risk as I have : ) as there is no information in the instructions. I'm assuming it must come from your doctor even though these can be purchased without a prescription. I weight about 190 lbs. and am 5'11" tall. I was told never to pump the pressure up more than half your body weight. At 190 lbs. that would be 95 lbs. For me, I feel that is too high . Start out your first time at 20 lbs. pressure for 10 minutes, then 40 lbs. for 10 minutes. I'm good at 40lbs but 60 should be OK too. This should not be a painful process. The two units will start to pull apart gently easing the lumbar area and hopefully for you, putting your back at ease. You may be a bit sore for a little while after but by the next day I was back in perfect condition for me. Again, the above information is from my experience only. I'm sure your Dr. or Chiropractor can confirm the proper pressure for you if you feel necessary. Please start slowly and I hope you feel the relief I have. Good luck!

(More customer reviews)When my chiropractor handed me some samples, I assumed in was just like Bengay or Aspercreme, etc., and I have rarely been glad to be so wrong. I've had chronic low back and hip pain for several years that I manage with prescription meds, and Biofreeze is by far the most effective topical pain reliever. It does the job for several hours and puts all other over-the-counter products to shame. I keep some at work, home and in my purse.
